Aleppo pepper — a moderately hot, oil-rich dried chili with fruity, slightly salty flavor — was produced and exported commercially by Armenian communities in Aleppo, Syria, before and after 1915. The spice became globally associated with the region's name, but Armenian merchants and farming communities were central to its commercial production and trade.
