Khachkars

Geghard monastery in the Azat River gorge represents a distinct regional tradition: the khachkar iconographic vocabulary was applied to architectural surfaces carved from living rock in the 13th century. The monastery's gavit (narthex) integrates khachkar rosette and interlacing programs into its walls, demonstrating the grammar's adaptability to monumental architectural contexts.
