Hovhannes Toumanian (1869–1923) transcribed and adapted Armenian oral folk tradition into literary form, preserving tales and ballads with pre-Christian themes. His narrative poem Anush (1890) draws on village folk tragedy, and his ballad The Capture of Tmkabert preserves an oral heroic narrative; through these works, Armenian oral mythology entered the literary canon.
