Mythology

The Daredevils of Sassoun was preserved for centuries by oral transmission through Armenian ashoughs (bards) performing dozens of regional variants before systematic transcription. The Armenian Academy of Sciences published a critical edition in 1961 drawn from over 400 recorded oral variants; Leon Surmelian's 1964 English translation introduced the epic to Western scholarly audiences.
