The poet Hovhannes Toumanian (1869–1923) produced the canonical modern literary redaction of the David of Sasun epic in 1903, titled The Brave Man of Sassoun, synthesizing dozens of regional oral variants he transcribed from village singers. His text standardized the epic's structure and remains the foundation for all modern Armenian literary editions.
