Mythology

Vahagn, the Armenian thunder and dragon-slayer god, bears the epithet 'Vishapakagh' (dragon-reaper). His birth is celebrated in a cosmogonic hymn preserved by Movses Khorenatsi (5th century): 'Heaven and earth were in travail; the crimson sea also was in travail; in the sea was a red reed; from the reed arose smoke, from the reed arose flame, and out of the flame leaped a youth.'
