The University of Gladzor and other medieval Armenian monastic universities taught a curriculum spanning grammar, rhetoric, logic, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music — the seven liberal arts of the European trivium-and-quadrivium tradition — alongside Armenian-specific theological and philological subjects. A vartabed candidate had to demonstrate competence in all seven.
