Approximately 31,000 medieval Armenian manuscripts survive worldwide today — about 17,000 of them held by the Matenadaran in Yerevan — of which roughly 5,000 to 7,000 contain illuminated miniatures painted in monastic scriptoriums between the 9th and 17th centuries. The corpus is among the largest single-language manuscript inheritances of the medieval Christian world.
