A medieval Armenian monastic complex such as Haghpat (UNESCO 1996) was a self-contained ecclesiastical city: at minimum a domed cruciform church, a gavit narthex, individual stone cells for monks, a refectory, a scriptorium-and-library, a bell-tower, defensive perimeter walls, and underground rock-cut hermits' cells โ€” all coexisting on a single mountain ledge.
