The 12th-century Armenian polymath Mkhitar Gosh — author of the Datastanagirk, the medieval Armenian legal code — codified the rule that no candidate could be granted the title of vartabed without examination by a panel of two, preferably three, existing vartabeds. The provision survives in current Armenian Apostolic ordination practice, eight centuries later.
