Saint Gregory the Illuminator, the missionary credited with converting King Tiridates III in 301 AD and inaugurating Armenia as the first Christian state, is recorded by his hagiographer Agathangelos as withdrawing in old age to the desolate Mount Sebuh — establishing the eremitic strand of Armenian monasticism that would dominate the country's religious life through the 4th–6th centuries.
