Over a millennium, more than 1,000 monasteries operated across historic Greater Armenia — from Tatev and Sanahin in modern Republic territory to Varagavank, Aghtamar, and the Surb Karapet of Mush in what is now eastern Turkey. Most have been ruined, repurposed, or repopulated only seasonally; roughly 60 still function liturgically inside Armenia today.
