A vartabed (vardapet) is the Armenian Apostolic Church's celibate teaching priest — the rough equivalent of a 'Doctor' in Western theology, but earned through monastic training, oral examination, and defense of original theological writings before a panel of existing vartabeds. The rank is awarded in 14 ascending degrees, of which only the highest few permit public preaching.
