Beyond silk, the Armenian merchant network handled a wide commodity portfolio — sugar, cotton, raisins, carpets, and natural dyes (most notably Armenian cochineal red, a source of the medieval European pigment 'vermilion') — adapting flexibly to whichever goods commanded the highest margin between Persia and the European entrepôts in any given season.
