Dvin, founded in the 4th century AD by King Khosrov III as the new royal capital after the abandonment of Artashat, became one of medieval Asia's largest cities. At its 9th–10th-century peak it housed an estimated 100,000 residents and served as the seat of the Catholicos of all Armenians, simultaneously a political, ecclesiastical, and commercial center.
