May 9 is Armenia's Victory and Peace Day, marking simultaneously the 1945 Soviet victory in WWII and the 1992 capture of Shushi during the First Karabakh War. Armenian losses in WWII were severe — roughly half of those mobilized are estimated to have been killed, the highest per-capita rate among Soviet republics — and the day functions as a double commemoration.
