Each October the village of Areni in Vayots Dzor hosts Armenia's largest wine festival, drawing tens of thousands to taste Areni Noir wines from indigenous-varietal grapes. The festival sits one valley away from the Areni-1 cave complex, where archaeologists in 2011 documented the world's oldest known winery (~4100 BC) — a 6,100-year continuity of viticulture in the same valley.
