Charles Aznavour (born Shahnour Aznavourian, Paris 1924), son of Armenian parents who emigrated from Tiflis to Paris in 1923, recorded 'Ils sont tombés' (They Have Fallen) in 1975—a direct elegy for victims of the Armenian Genocide. Performed throughout his six-decade international career, the song brought genocide commemoration into mainstream European popular culture.
