Genocide & Resilience

Declared on 28 May 1918, the First Republic of Armenia provided a political home for genocide survivors in the southern Caucasus. It signed the Treaty of Sèvres in August 1920—briefly envisioning an enlarged Armenian state—before Soviet Russian forces absorbed the republic in December 1920. Its tricolor flag endured into Soviet Armenia and became the flag of modern Armenia.
