Wine & Viticulture

Alongside grape wine, Armenians have made pomegranate wine for centuries — a tradition supported by bas-reliefs at the 10th-century Armenian Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Akhtamar Island in Lake Van, which depict pomegranates used for fermentation alongside grapes. In Armenian mythology, the pomegranate is a symbol of abundance, fertility, and protection — its crimson seeds representing the days of the year. The Ijevan Winery in Tavush province is particularly celebrated for its pomegranate wine.
