Every October, the village of Areni in Vayots Dzor transforms into Armenia's grandest wine celebration: the Areni Wine Festival, launched in 2009, draws visitors from across the country and the diaspora to taste over 200 commercial wines alongside 100+ homemade village varieties. Set against ancient red and yellow cliff faces, with a medieval church overlooking the river, the festival is part harvest fair, part archaeological pilgrimage — a living connection to the cave a few kilometres away where the world's oldest winery was unearthed.
