Areni Noir is an ancient grape variety endemic to Armenia, named for the village of Areni in Vayots Dzor where its lineage stretches back over six millennia. Thick-skinned and disease-resistant, it produces light- to medium-bodied reds with vibrant acidity, silky tannins, and a flavour profile evoking cherry, pomegranate, and dark fruit with mineral undertones โ€” often likened to a fusion of Pinot Noir and Sangiovese. Because Armenia escaped phylloxera, some Areni Noir vines grow on their own original rootstock and are over a century old.
