Wine & Viticulture

Excavations beginning in 2007 inside Armenia's Areni-1 cave, co-directed by Gregory Areshian of UCLA and Boris Gasparyan of Armenia's National Academy of Sciences, uncovered the world's oldest known complete winery: a clay-slab press for stomping grapes, a 60-centimeter fermentation vat, large storage jars, drinking cups, and desiccated grape skins. Radiocarbon dating placed the installation between 4100 and 4000 BC — roughly 6,100 years ago — predating the previously oldest known winery by at least 1,000 years.
