After decades of diplomatic suppression by successive U.S. administrations deferring to Turkish objections, Congress passed Armenian Genocide recognition in the House (October 2019, 405–11) and Senate (December 2019, unanimously). On April 24, 2021 — Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day — President Joe Biden became the first sitting U.S. president to formally use the word "genocide" in an official statement, joining over 30 countries that have done the same.
