In 1604–1606, Shah Abbas I of Safavid Persia forcibly resettled tens of thousands of Armenians from the town of Julfa to a new quarter near Isfahan, granting them a monopoly on Persia's lucrative raw silk export trade. The resulting suburb of New Julfa became the hub of one of the greatest intercontinental trade networks of the early modern era, stretching from London and Amsterdam to Manila and Acapulco.
