Yuri Vardanyan, a Soviet Armenian weightlifter from Leninakan (now Gyumri), won Olympic gold at the 1980 Moscow Games in the 82.5 kg class — becoming the first weightlifter in history to achieve a 400 kg total in that category, simultaneously breaking both the Olympic and world records. Over his career he set 42 world records across three weight divisions.
