Notable Armenians

Mkrtich Khrimian (1820–1907), known as "Khrimian Hayrik" (Father Khrimian), served as Catholicos of All Armenians from 1893 to 1907. In 1878 he led the Armenian delegation to the Congress of Berlin hoping to win international guarantees for Ottoman Armenians — but was denied entry. Returning home, he delivered his famous "Iron Ladle" sermon: the great powers had served themselves harissa with iron ladles, he said, while Armenians arrived only with paper ladles and left empty-handed. The sermon became a founding text of the Armenian revolutionary movement.
