Serj Tankian, born in Beirut in 1967 to Armenian parents and raised in Los Angeles, is the lead vocalist of System of a Down — one of the most commercially successful and politically charged heavy metal bands in history, with over 40 million albums sold. All four members of the band are of Armenian descent. Tankian has used his platform relentlessly to advocate for recognition of the Armenian Genocide, receiving Armenia's Prime Minister's Medal in 2011.
