Sergei Parajanov (1924–1990), born in Tbilisi to Armenian parents, directed The Color of Pomegranates (1969) — a visually intoxicating, nearly wordless meditation on the life of 18th-century Armenian poet Sayat-Nova. Suppressed by Soviet authorities for decades, the film is now ranked among the greatest works in cinema history. Parajanov was imprisoned by the Soviet regime in 1973 on charges widely regarded as political persecution.
