Atom Egoyan, born in Cairo in 1960 to Armenian parents and raised in Canada, is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers of his generation. His 1997 film The Sweet Hereafter earned him Academy Award nominations for both Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. His 2002 film Ararat was the first major English-language feature to confront the Armenian Genocide directly on screen.
