Hovhannes Tumanyan (1869–1923) is Armenia's national poet — author of poems, ballads, fables, and epics rooted in the everyday life of the Armenian highlands. His verse epic Anush (1892), a tragic love story set in the Lori region, is considered his masterpiece and inspired Armen Tigranian's eponymous opera (1912), one of the pillars of Armenian operatic tradition. UNESCO celebrated his 150th anniversary in 2019.
