Garry Kasparov, widely regarded as the greatest chess player of all time, has Armenian heritage through his mother Klara — both of whose parents were Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh. Kasparov adopted his mother's surname at age 12 after his Jewish father's death; she dedicated her life to managing his career and is credited as the architect behind his path to the world championship.
