Notable Armenians

Tigran Petrosian, born in Tbilisi to Armenian parents, became the ninth World Chess Champion in 1963 by defeating Mikhail Botvinnik, defended the title against Boris Spassky in 1966, and lost it to Spassky in a 1969 rematch. Nicknamed "Iron Tigran," he pioneered prophylactic chess โ€” anticipating and neutralizing the opponent's threats before they materialize, rather than attacking outright.
