When Gregory the Illuminator formalized Armenia's conversion, he oversaw the destruction of major pagan temples — including the great Anahit sanctuary at Eriza, described by Plutarch as "the wealthiest and noblest in Armenia." Yet pre-Christian culture survived in disguise: the water festival Vardavar was absorbed into Christian observance, the animal sacrifice tradition (matagh) continues to this day, and the ancient sun-cross symbol (arevakhach) still adorns Armenian churches and jewelry.
