Before Christianity, Armenians worshipped a sophisticated pantheon: Aramazd (supreme creator), Anahit (goddess of fertility), Vahagn (dragon-slaying storm god), and Mihr (god of sun and light). The Temple of Garni — the only surviving Greco-Roman columnar temple in the Caucasus, built in 77 AD and dedicated to Mihr — stands as physical evidence of the rich pagan civilization that Christianity displaced.
