When Constantine issued the Edict of Milan in 313 AD, he did not make Christianity Rome's state religion — he merely legalized it after centuries of persecution. Armenia had already declared Christianity its state religion twelve years earlier. Constantine himself was not formally baptized until his deathbed in 337 AD, more than three decades after Armenia's official conversion.
