According to Armenian Christian tradition, the Apostles Thaddeus (Jude) and Bartholomew (Nathanael) brought Christianity to Armenia in the 1st century AD — Thaddeus around 43 AD, Bartholomew around 66 AD. Both were reportedly martyred on Armenian soil, earning the title "First Enlighteners of Armenia." This is why the church is called the Armenian Apostolic Church: it claims unbroken lineage to the apostles themselves.
