Thirty-three years after Avarayr, in 484 AD, Armenian commander Vahan Mamikonian — nephew of the fallen Vardan — negotiated the Treaty of Nvarsak with the Sassanid King Balash. The treaty formally guaranteed Armenian Christians freedom of worship, banned new Zoroastrian fire-altars in Armenia, and stopped forced conversions. The "spiritual victory" of Avarayr had become a documented political reality.
