The Battle of Avarayr survives in history through The History of Vardan and the Armenian War, written in classical Armenian by Yeghishe (c. 410–475 AD), a near-contemporary. He recorded the oath taken by Armenian soldiers before battle: "We are ready for persecution and death and every affliction and torture for the sake of the holy churches which our forefathers entrusted to us."
