Vardan Mamikonian, hereditary commander of the Armenian armed forces, led the Christian resistance at Avarayr and died in battle. He and his 1,036 fallen warriors are venerated as martyrs by the Armenian Apostolic Church — their feast day celebrated on the last Thursday before Great Lent every year. Vardan stands as the defining symbol of faith over survival in Armenian national identity.
