First Christian Nation

Armenia's adoption of Christianity is traditionally dated to 301 AD — twelve years before Constantine's Edict of Milan in 313. Modern scholars debate whether the actual conversion may have occurred closer to 314, since Tiridates was a client-king of Rome and could not officially adopt a religion Rome was still persecuting. Either way, Armenia's claim as first Christian nation holds: only the margin of precedence is at issue.
