According to Agathangelos, Gregory received a vision in which Christ descended from heaven as a figure of blazing light, surrounded by an angelic host, and struck the earth with a golden hammer — marking the spot where Armenia's mother cathedral was to be built. The cathedral raised there was named Etchmiadzin, literally meaning "where the Only-Begotten descended."
