Khor Virap Monastery, Armenia — wide panorama

First Christian Nation

Tiridates condemned Gregory to Khor Virap — "the deep dungeon" — a pit near Artashat from which no one was meant to emerge alive. For thirteen years he survived in that underground chamber, kept alive by Christian women who lowered bread to him through the opening. The pit, roughly 4 meters across and 6 meters deep, still exists today beneath Khor Virap Monastery.
